An ex-employee of a car service centre was arrested today for allegedly stealing a car and later demanding Rs three lakh from the owner for its return.
S Ravi of Jawahar Nagar in his complaint on June 18 had stated that his car parked in front of his house the previous night was missing,a police press release said.
While police were on the lookout,Ravi received a call from a man who said he would return the missing vehicle near Anna Arch here on June 26 in return for Rs three lakh.
Acting on the information,police nabbed the 23-year old,hailing from Sriperumbudur along with the stolen vehicle.
Investigations revealed the man had earlier worked for a service centre and gathered information about Ravi and his car from the RTO office.
Having made a fake number plate,he stole the car in the wee hours on June 17-18 and tried to sell it. Since he did not have the RC book,he proposed to return the car to the owner in return for Rs three lakh,it said.
