The special court constituted to try the Mumbai terror attacks case on Monday named legal aid cell lawyer Anjali Waghmare to defend Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone Pakistani terrorist caught alive on the night of November 26,2008.

Waghmare, from Pune, has nearly 10 years of experience in civil and criminal cases. She said she had considered all aspects before agreeing to take up the case and would seek security for herself.

The court decision came after Pakistan failed to respond to Kasab’s plea for legal assistance. Kasab,on his own,was unable to secure a lawyer to defend his case.

The Kasab’s trial will begin on April 6 in a special high security court in Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai. The court informed Kasab that his lawyer would brief him on April 6 on the day the trial begins.

Waghmare was also present during the video conferencing and was introduced to Kasab, who said he had no objection to her appointment as his lawyer.
