Expressing concern that 1.14 lakh people were killed in road accidents annually in the country,a Congress member in Lok Sabha today made a strong plea for stringent laws to curb drunken and negligent driving.
Observing that 30 lives were lost in road accidents on a daily basis,Adhir Chowdhury said the annual figure was 1,14,590 which was much more than those killed in natural disasters,insurgency or terror strikes.
Raising the matter during Zero Hour,he said when the government was carrying out major programmes to build highways and roads across the country and investing in a massive way,it was pertinent that severe and stringent penalties be imposed on drunken or negligent driving to check road mishaps.
Chowdhury also demanded that the government evolve a road safety mechanism to deal with the problem.
Raghuvansh Prasad Singh (RJD) wanted the Centre to initiate discussions with Bihar,Jharkhand,Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh to start work on four major dams to help their backward regions get power and irrigation.
He said these projects at Katwan,Bateshwar,Kanhar and Koel would benefit 4-5 lakh people in these areas which were facing the problem of extremism also.
