Army Major faces court martial for relations with US woman

Having any kind of 'relations' with foreign nationals is a punishable offence under the Army Act.

An Army major,who has represented India in international polo events,is facing a General Court Martial (GCM) for allegedly having a relationship with an American women in violation of rules.

Having any kind of relations with foreign nationals without proper authorisation is a punishable offence under the Army Act.

Maj Saurabh Saharan of the 61 Cavalry is facing a General Court Martial which started on April 16 here after he was indicted by a Court of Inquiry (CoI) and Summary of Evidence (SoE) for allegedly having contacts with the American national,Army sources said.

The American woman had levelled charges against the officer in a letter to the then Army Chief Gen Deepak Kapoor in 2009 after which a court of inquiry was ordered.

Army spokesperson Colonel Jaideep Dahiya said “infringement was reported and after that disciplinary action was initiated. The legal process in the matter is on.”

When contacted,Maj Saharan expressed inability to comment on the case. Sources close to him said the officer has filed a petition against the ongoing GCM in the Jaipur branch of the Armed Forces Tribunal.
