Methodology of data collection questionable, error suspected in software used to collate numbers: Pakistan on WHO's COVID-19 deaths

The Pakistani government has rejected the World Health Organization's (WHO) report on number of COVID-19 deaths in the country, questioning the United Nations body's methodology to collect data and supposing an error in the software used to collate the numbers.

Over 90% Covid deaths went unreported? Why the WHO data raises questions

The WHO’s estimate of 47.4 lakh Covid-related deaths in India in 2020 and 2021 flies in the face of overall death data, historical trends in death reporting, and Covid death compensation claims from states. If, indeed, the WHO numbers are taken at face value, that would imply India missed 90 per cent of all Covid-19 deaths in the first two years of the pandemic – and possibly millions of deaths were not even recorded.

Significantly past data shows that India records over 90 per cent of all its deaths. Several population scientists The Indian Express has spoken to in the last few weeks said missing such a large number of deaths was “extremely unlikely”.

According to WHO, 8.3 lakh Covid-19 deaths happened in 2020 – the official Covid-19 toll for India for that year is 1.49 lakh. The government Thursday said that an estimated 81.2 lakh people died in the country that year due to all causes. This is consistent with past data that shows that, on an average, about 83.5 lakh people die in the country every year in the last decade and a half. (Read the full story here)

As Beijing battles outbreak, China warns 'zero COVID' doubters

Beijing residents fretted on Friday over tightening COVID curbs in its biggest district and dozens of new cases reported daily as China's leaders reiterated their resolve to battle the virus and threatened action against critics of their strict measures.

Incurring a heavy economic cost and facing rare public criticism on its tightly-policed internet, China is increasingly out of step with the rest of the world where COVID restrictions are being abandoned and vaccines relied on to protect people. Internationally, industry organisations have complained that China's 'zero-COVID' policies have global economic reverberations. At home, the population worries about painful, long-term restrictions.

In the latest ratcheting up of restrictions, Beijing authorities on Friday said all non-essential services in its biggest district Chaoyang, home to embassies and large offices, would shut. Mass testing will also resume in at least four districts over the weekend. (Reuters)

Hangzhou Asian Games postponed after fresh Covid wave in China

The Asian Games, which were to be held from September 10-25 in Hangzhou, have been postponed due to the pandemic, China’s state media reported on Friday. No alternative date has been announced so far.

The decision comes at a time when China, where the virus emerged in late 2019, is experiencing its biggest Covid-19 outbreak. The country is battling a record number of daily cases in Shanghai, which has been under lockdown for more than a month. Shanghai is just a short train ride away from Hangzhou, where mass Covid-19 testing began last week to keep a check on rising omicron cases. In the last few days, China’s capital Beijing, too, began tightening its Covid curbs. Read more

Over 92 pc of Covid patients saw improvements after attending online yoga classes: Study

Over 92 per cent of COVID-19 patients who attended yoga classes while in home-isolation witnessed immediate improvement in overall symptoms, according to an impact study conducted by the Delhi Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research University (DPSRU).

The Delhi government has been offering free online yoga classes to Covid patients recuperating in home-isolation. At least 88.9 per cent of them said they found improvement in breathing issues after they started attending the sessions, the study claimed.

"The findings of the impact study on COVID-19 patients show that people have accepted our initiative to make yoga a part of everyday life wholeheartedly. During Covid, patients needed a healing touch to recover fast physically as well as psychologically. Most of the patients were suffering from a feeling of loneliness during the isolation, and our yoga instructors became their companions during that time," Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said. 11 girls of Jharkhand residential school test Covid positive

As many as 11 students of Kasturba Gandhi Girls Residential School in Jharkhand's Chatra district were tested positive for Covid-19 in the past two days, officials said on Friday. Eight girls of class 12 and two of class 11 were found to be afflicted with the disease on May 4, while another one tested positive for the virus on Thursday.

A random test for Covid-19 was conducted by the administration of the institution on April 27. A total of 195 students, as well as staff, underwent RT-PCR tests that day. “We were provided with the test report on May 4 in which 10 students were reported to be positive with Covid-19,” Arundhati Dutta, in charge of Kasturba Gandhi Residential schools in Chatra, told PTI.

She said that there were no visible symptoms among the students of the central government-run institute. “Of the 10, eight students went home after their examinations. In view of the test report, a rapid antigen test (RAT) was carried out in the school on Thursday," Dutta said. (PTI)

Speakers at health conference object to WHO report on Covid deaths in India

The ongoing 14th conference of the Central Council of Health and Family Welfare (CCHFW) strongly objected to a WHO report estimating 4.7 million (47 lakh) Covid-related fatalities in India as baseless and devoid of facts, sources said.

In its report released on Thursday, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that nearly 15 million people were killed either by the coronavirus or by its impact on overwhelmed health systems in the past two years, more than double the official death toll of six million. Most of the fatalities were in Southeast Asia, Europe and the Americas.

According to the report, there were 4.7 million Covid deaths in India -- 10 times the official figures and almost a third of Covid deaths globally. (PTI)

Rahul Gandhi doing politics over COVID-19 deaths: BJP

The BJP on Friday accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of doing politics over COVID-19 deaths, alleging that the WHO's data and Congress' "beta" (son) are wrong.

At a press conference, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said the World Health Organisation's (WHO) methodology to calculate estimated deaths in India due to the virus is "flawed" and "imaginary" and the Indian government had conveyed its objections to the organisation.

Gandhi has tried repeatedly to lower Prime Minister Narendra Modi's image since 2014 and has in the process lowered India's image, Patra said. India has a robust mechanism for birth and death registration under the Registrar General of India, he added. (PTI)

China builds permanent COVID testing stations for life after lockdown

China is setting up thousands of permanent PCR testing stations, with 9,000 already completed in Shanghai alone, as authorities seek to "normalise" tough pandemic controls even after the current round of lockdowns end.

At present, nearly 25 million residents in the eastern financial hub of Shanghai remain under some form of lockdown as the city battles China's biggest ever coronavirus outbreak.

But in a bid to head off future flare-ups, municipal authorities have been setting up a system that will make regular COVID-19 testing a permanent feature of everyday life, with other cities taking similar steps. Of Shanghai's 9,000 testing sites, 5,000 were already operating, vice-mayor Wu Qing said on Friday. (Reuters)

Till as recently as last week, the organisers and the Olympic Council of Asia had insisted that the Asian Games, second only to the Olympics in terms of size, will go ahead as scheduled in September. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Narinder Batra had earlier this week said they received an intimation continental body, confirming the same. Read more.

FDA restricts J&J's Covid-19 vaccine due to blood clot risk By Matthew Perrone and Lauran Neergaard

US regulators have strictly limited who can receive Johnson & Johnson's Covid-19 vaccine due to the ongoing risk of rare but serious blood clots.

The Food and Drug Administration said the shot should only be given to adults who cannot receive a different vaccine or specifically request J&J's vaccine. US authorities for months have recommended that Americans get Pfizer or Moderna shots instead of J&J's vaccine. FDA's vaccine chief Dr. Peter Marks said the agency decided to restrict the vaccine after taking another look at the data on the risks of life-threatening blood clots and concluding that they are limited to J&J's vaccine.

"If there's an alternative that appears to be equally effective in preventing severe outcomes from Covid-19, we'd rather see people opting for that," Marks said. "But we've been careful to say that -- compared to no vaccine -- this is still a better option." The problem occurs in the first two weeks after vaccination, he added: "So if you had the vaccine six months ago, you can sleep soundly tonight knowing this isn't an issue." The FDA authorised J&J's shot in February last year for adults 18 and up. (AP)

Science doesn't lie, Modi does: Rahul on WHO death report

Reacting to the World Health Organisation's latest report on excess deaths due to Covid, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi repeated the WHO's claims about the number of deaths being underreported in the country.

"47 lakh Indians died due to the Covid pandemic. NOT 4.8 lakh as claimed by the Govt," he tweeted. "Science doesn't LIE. Modi does."

Shanghai says Covid infections on downward trend for 2 weeks

The number of Covid-19 infections in China's financial hub of Shanghai has been on a "continuous downward trend" since April 22, the city's vice major Wu Qing said on Friday.

"Currently, our city's epidemic prevention and control situation is steadily improving, and the epidemic has come under effective control," he told a news conference. Shanghai reported 4,024 new local asymptomatic coronavirus cases on May 5, down from 4,390 a day earlier.

Confirmed symptomatic cases stood at 245, also down from 261 a day earlier. Deaths fell to 12, from 13 a day earlier. (Reuters)

WHO: 47.4 lakh India Covid deaths, nearly 10 times official count

COVID COULD have killed as many as 47.4 lakh people in India in 2020 and 2021, either directly due to infection or through its indirect impact, the World Health Organisation said on Thursday.

The figure, disputed by India, is nearly ten times the country’s official Covid death toll of 4.81 lakh at the end of 2021. In its report on excess deaths due to Covid, WHO said that an estimated 1.5 crore people are likely to have succumbed to the direct or indirect impact of the disease globally during the first two years of the pandemic — instead of the 54 lakh that have been recorded officially by countries separately.

For India, the WHO said about 8.3 lakh deaths are estimated to have happened in 2020 itself. Read more.

Over 90% Covid deaths went unreported? Why WHO data raises questions

While there is little doubt that India’s official Covid-19 death toll is an undercount, as is the case with probably most other countries, the “excess mortality” figures released by the World Health Organisation Thursday raise several questions.

Read more.

The cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 190 crore, the Union Health Ministry said on Saturday. So far, more than 3.01 crore (3,01,97,120) children in the age group of 12-14 years have been administered the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine. Till now, 9,95,265 precaution doses have been administered to those aged 18-59 years, according to Health Ministry data.

Significantly past data shows that India records over 90 per cent of all its deaths. Several population scientists The Indian Express has spoken to in the last few weeks said missing such a large number of deaths was “extremely unlikely”.
