The Congress Friday released the first list of 39 candidates across eight states and one Union Territory for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Former party president Rahul Gandhi will contest from Kerala’s Wayanad for the second time, while party general secretary KC Venugopal has been fielded from the state’s Alappuzha.
Sitting MP Shashi Tharoor will contest from Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram for the fourth consecutive time. The ex-Union minister has been winning the Thiruvananthapuram seat since 2009.
The party has fielded former Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel from Rajnandgaon seat and former minister Tamardwaj Sahu from Mahasamund, while Jyotsna Mahant will contest from Korba, Chhattisgarh.
The Congress has fielded 16 candidates in Kerala; 7 in Karnataka; 6 in Chhattisgarh; 4 in Telangana; 2 in Meghalaya; 1 each in Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura and 1 in Lakshadweep. The list features 15 candidates from General Category and 24 Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribes and OBC candidates.
The Congress Election Committee had on Thursday met to clear names of 60 candidates from 10 states, including Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, Delhi and Chhattisgarh.

The BJP had last week released its first list of 195 candidates from 16 states and two Union Territories (UT) for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, days after a marathon meeting of the party’s Central Election Committee (CEC). Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been fielded once again from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and Home Minister Amit Shah will contest from Gandhinagar in Gujarat. The BJP list includes 34 Union ministers and two former chief ministers.
