Former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb Thursday claimed that the Communists would not return to power in the northeastern state even in 2088.

Speaking to reporters at his residence in Agartala, Deb criticised the Opposition CPI(M)’s ‘support’ for a Tripura-based woman content creator who was arrested for allegedly abusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, among others.

The content creator, identified as Madhabi Biswas, was arrested on Sunday, produced before the court on Monday and remanded in three-day police custody.

CPI(M) politburo member Jitendra Chaudhury, former chief minister Manik Sarkar and others have condemned her arrest and said it was an attack on free speech.

Taking potshots at Sarkar, Biplab Kumar Deb said, “The woman made personal attacks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha. It is very unfortunate that senior leaders like Manik Sarkar, who has been CM for four terms, called the woman who explicitly abused the prime minister of the country a ‘bhodromohila’ (lady).”

Asked if he was concerned about the CPI(M) and the Congress joining hands once again in the next Assembly polls to be held in 2028, Deb said he doesn’t feel the Communists would come back to power in Tripura even in 2088, let alone 2028.

Speaking on the recent clashes between the supporters of the BJP and ally Tipra Motha, Deb said such incidents have no place in a civilised society. He added that he was confident that Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore has faith in the top leadership of the saffron party and that tribals of Tripura have benefited the most under PM Modi’s leadership.
