Six killed, some feared trapped in mishap at steel plant in Chhattisgarh

Several injured people have been rescued. Three of the injured are in critical condition, police said.

Six people were killed and six were injured in an accident at a private steel plant in Raipur on Friday afternoon, officials said.

The incident took place at around 2.30 pm at the plant of Godavari Power & Ispat Limited in the Siltara area, an industrial hub on the outskirts of Chhattisgarh’s capital city.

Additional Superintendent of Police Lakhan Patle said, “Work to clean the furnace, using high-pressure water to remove the thick layer of slag deposited on its wall and roof, was underway when a thick deposit of metal fell down, trapping those underneath.”

Six employees of the steel plant were killed in the incident. Police, the fire brigade and disaster management officials, with the help of employees of the steel plant, rescued some of the injured and rushed them to a nearby hospital. Three of the rescued persons are in critical condition, police said.

The deceased have been identified as managers G L Prasanna Kumar and Kaligotla Prasanna Kumar, assistant managers Ghanshyam Ghomare and Nirakar Mallick, and helpers Tulsi Ram Bhatt and Narayan Sahu.

General manager A Chakradhar Rao, senior technician Dipendra Mahato, junior technician Chandra Prakash Patel and three workers were injured.

The steel plant has been evacuated and cordoned off by police. Several people, including family members and friends of those feared trapped in the plant, have been anxiously waiting outside.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed his grief in a post on X. “We have received the distressing news of the death of six workers and injuries to several workers in the accident. My condolences are with the families of the deceased. I pray to God for peace for the departed souls, strength for the families, and the swift recovery of the injured. Om Shanti,” Sai said in the post.
