Govt interested in maintaining image, integrity of CBI: Arun Jaitley

Welcoming the SC order, the Finance Minister further said all officers of CBI particularly the top two officers -- like Ceasar's wife -- must be beyond suspicion.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Friday termed the Supreme Court order on the CBI row as an ‘extremely positive development’, saying it was in the interest of the nation that the truth comes out.

In its ruling Friday, the Supreme Court asked the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) to complete its inquiry into allegations against CBI Director Alok Kumar Verma within two weeks and barred M Nageswara Rao who was named as interim director from taking any major policy decision.

Referring to the massive infighting in the CBI, Jaitley said the recent developments had eroded the credibility of the central agency and the apex court’s ruling has further strengthened the fairness criteria by asking for completion of investigation within two weeks.

“In order to ensure fairness, the Supreme Court has appointed a retired judge to oversee the investigation,” he said. “The government is only interested in maintaining professionalism, the image and the institutional integrity of the CBI,” Jaitley was quoted as saying by PTI.

Opinion | The CBI has a history of politicisation. But things have never been this bad

As reported by ANI, Jaitley said: “All officers of CBI particularly the top two officers — like Ceasar’s wife — must be beyond suspicion, they must be above suspicion, and that is why it is in larger national interest that the truth is established following the highest standards of fairness and the due process of law.”
