Nearly 126 cattle died from Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in Tripura since 2022, Animal Resource Development (ARD) Minister Sudhangshu Das stated Friday while replying to a question from CPI(M) MLA Jitendra Chaudhury during the ongoing winter session of the Assembly.
The disease causes considerable loss of milk production in the A2 breed of cows.
The minister further informed that an amount of Rs 10.12 lakh was spent in the last three years to compensate 187 farmers who lost their cattle to LSD.
Currently, three cow shelters – Debipur Gaushala at Bishalgarh in Sepahijala district with 800 cattle, Muhuripur Gaushala at Santirbazar in South Tripura district with 850 cattle and Baba Gorakhnath Gaushala at Dharmanagar in North Tripura district with 51 cattle – are in operation in the northeastern state.
The state has been assisting these cow shelters, including providing medicine, treatment, vaccination, etc, the minister said but added that no allocation of funds was made till December in the 2024-25 financial year.
Das said the state government has plans to launch cow shelters in all districts and modernise the existing shelters in the coming days.
