BJP announces Madan Rathore, Chunnilal Garasiya as its RS pick from Rajasthan

The BJP on Monday announced Chunnilal Garasiya and Madan Rathore as its candidates for the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan.

Madan Rathore, 69, is a native of Pali district and has been MLA twice during Vasundhara Raje’s two tenures as Chief Minister between 2003-08 and 2013-18. He started out as a Pracharak with the RSS in the 1970s, before moving on to the BJP in the mid-1980s. After holding various posts in the Pali district unit of the BJP, he moved to the state unit. He won from Sumerpur Assembly seat twice, defeating Congress leader Bina Kak both times. Between 2015 and 2018 he was also the BJP Deputy Chief Whip in the Assembly.

After being denied a ticket in the 2023 Assembly elections, Rathore had announced to contest as an Independent. However, he later withdrew saying that PM Modi himself had called him asking him to withdraw.

The 70-year-old Garasiya, a tribal leader, was born in Dungarpur district. He studied till Intermediate in Udaipur, over a 100 kms away from Dungarpur. He went on to be elected twice from Udaipur Rural Assembly seat in 1990 and 1993. As a minister of state, he also held the charge of Tribal Area Development and Public Works Department (PWD) among others. He is married and has three daughters.

The BJP is expected to win two of the three seats which have fallen vacant in Rajasthan, while Congress is expected to win one. The RS tenures of former PM Manmohan Singh and BJP’s Bhupender Yadav will end in April, while BJP’s Kirodi Lal Meena had resigned as an MP after being elected from Sawai Madhopur in the Assembly polls seat last year.
