Shortly after 12 Bangladeshi nationals escaped from a temporary detention centre at Narsingarh in West Tripura district, one escapee was recaptured, an official from the Social Welfare and Social Education department said in Agartala on Sunday.
The Tripura Police had registered a case in the matter on October 1 under Section 262 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Speaking on the issue, Tapan Kumar Das, Director, Social Welfare and Social Education department, said that the foreign detainees had completed the tenure of their judicial custody and were waiting for their deportation when they fled from the detention centre.
“Twelve Bangladeshi nationals fled from the temporary detention centre on September 29. Till now, one of them has been recaptured,” Das told media persons.
Das added that his department provides food, accommodation and basic facilities to the inmates, but the responsibility of providing security at the centre rests with the Home Department.
“These detainees are not convicts or undertrial criminals, rather free individuals who have already served their designated jail term for flouting the Passports Act or other laws. They are simply waiting for their turn to be deported to their country of origin through the proper channel. The government provided them a safe space for lodging and food for the time being to ensure they don’t face any other crises in this country,” the official stated.
The authorities have started a search to trace the rest of the missing foreign nationals.
Currently, over 80 inmates, most of whom are Bangladeshi nationals, apart from a few Rohingya persons, five Nigerians and one French national, are housed in the temporary detention centre at Narsingarh.
A few days ago, six inmates of the Dhamanagar sub-jail in North Tripura district had escaped after injuring a security guard with sharp weapons. Two of the inmates were later arrested again.
