Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday said the attempted attack on Chief Justice of India B R Gavai is “a reflection of the hatred spread by the Sangh Parivar”.
“To dismiss it as an individual act is to ignore the growing climate of intolerance. When communal fanaticism dares to target even the Chief Justice of India, it exposes the grave danger of this divisive and venomous politics that must be confronted without hesitation,’’ he said.
In a statement, Vijayan said that as per reports, a person in lawyer’s robes had thrown shoes at the CJI, alleging that he was working against Sanatana Dharma.
“This act cannot be seen as an emotional expression of a person who has lost his sense of direction. It is the poisonous communal propaganda of the Sangh Parivar that takes individuals to this dangerous state of mind. Such attacks, even inside the Supreme Court, are the products of an ideology that breeds hatred. The fuel for this act is the intolerance created by the RSS and Parivar over a hundred years. What happened in the Supreme Court today reminds us that the communal hatred that had not hesitated to shoot at Mahatma Gandhi still remains,” he said.
This is not the first time the Kerala CM has taken on the RSS.
On Independence Day this year, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the 100 years of RSS as a “very proud and glorious” journey of the “world’s biggest NGO”, Vijayan had deplored it, saying that “the attempt to bestow parenthood of the Independence to RSS is a denial of history as well as an insult to the freedom struggle”.
Last year, when the film Kerala Story got embroiled in controversy, Vijayan said it was part of the RSS agenda to humiliate the state. He said a “blatant lie” was created in the imagination of certain people and was presented as a film to tarnish the image of the state.
The incident drew criticism from other quarters too. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge wrote on X, “An attempt to attack the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India in the Supreme Court today is unprecedented, shameful and abhorrent. It is an attack on the dignity of our Judiciary and the rule of law. When a sitting Chief Justice who rose to the nation’s highest judicial office through merit, integrity, and perseverance is targeted in such a manner, it sends a deeply disturbing message. It reflects an attempt to intimidate and humiliate a man who has broken social barriers to uphold the Constitution.”
“Such mindless act shows how hate, fanaticism and bigotry has engulfed our society in the past decade,” he wrote.
