Heavy rainfall continued to wreak havoc in parts of Rajasthan with at least 11 people being reported dead in rain-related incidents over the weekend. Authorities rescued hundreds in rain-affected areas.
An Orange alert was issued for several districts Sunday, including Ajmer, Bhilwara, Sikar, Sirohi, Jalore, Nagaur, and Pali, while 18 districts were on Yellow or ‘Be Aware (Be Updated)’ mode. However, as per the Jaipur Meteorological Centre, the situation is set to improve in the coming days with all districts expected to go back to Green or ‘No Warning’ by Thursday. Including Jaipur, schools have been shut in about 20 districts for one to three days.
In Nagaur, a dilapidated house collapsed due to heavy rainfall, killing two persons. In Jhalawar, a car drowned in Kali Sindh River, killing two persons while two others who were in the car are still missing. In Udaipur, four children aged 14 to 10 drowned in a flooded mine on Sunday.
In Bhilwara, rescuers retrieved the body of a 17-year-old on Sunday. The boy was reported missing in Mandalgarh’s Govta Dam on Friday after he had slipped while taking a selfie.
In Bundi, two women died in separate incidents – while a 50-year-old was swept away in floods, a 65-year-old died after a wall of her home collapsed due to rains.
Kota, Bundi and Sawai Madhopur are among the worst hit following incessant rains over the past 2-3 days. In Sawai Madhopur, several villages have been cut off from the district headquarters following heavy rainfall which has flooded or damaged several access roads. A truck carrying SDRF personnel also toppled in Sawai Madhopur, leading to one person being stuck underneath, although he was immediately rescued.
In Sawai Madhopur, MLA Kirodi Lal Meena, who is also the Cabinet minister for Disaster Management and Relief and Civil Defense, took stock of the flood affected areas on Saturday and Sunday.
In Kota, Lok Sabha Speaker and local MP Om Birla visited the flood-affected areas on Friday and Saturday. In Bundi, the army has joined the rescue efforts. Here, the state highway has sustained severe damage from the rains.
In Sawai Madhopur on Sunday morning, SDRF personnel rescued 17 locals from Dhanoli village “which became an island,” as per SDRF officials. The 17 rescued included 7 men, 4 women and 6 kids. In the district’s Malarna Dungar, SDRF personnel rescued 20 persons who were stuck in flooding due to an overflowing Banas River early on Sunday. This included 4 men, 7 women and 9 children. Also on Sunday morning, SDRF personnel rescued 27 persons in Bundi’s Deikhera.
In Tonk’s Sureli, SDRF personnel rescued 3 locals and 9 cattle with a motor boat on Sunday morning. In Nagaur, SDRF rescued 4 persons in Panchori on Sunday afternoon.
In Bundi’s Jhalaji ka Baran, SDRF personnel rescued a total of 31 persons. The rescue efforts began overnight on Saturday following an overflowing Mej river. By around 2 am Saturday, 18 persons had been rescued. On Sunday morning, 13 more persons were rescued through motor boats.
On Saturday, as many as 103 people were rescued by the SDRF personnel from Bundi’s Rihana village which was also flooded from the Mej river. Overall, over 500 people have been rescued in Bundi by the SDRF, NDRF, Army, etc. over the weekend.
Similarly, also on Saturday, 46 people were rescued from multiple places in Tonk, apart from around 40 cattle, while 7 persons were rescued from Baran and 32 people from Kota Rural, respectively.
