A soldier died and four others had to be hospitalised after nearly three dozen soldiers collapsed due to heat and exhaustion during an endurance run conducted at Mamun military station near Pathankot on Saturday.
The condition of the four is stated to be critical.
According to Army sources, a 9 Corps recce troop competition was organised on Saturday morning. During the event, 34 soldiers collapsed due to hot and humid weather conditions and were rushed to Pathankot Military Hospital.
The training activity was being undertaken by 11 officers, 11 JCOs and 120 Other Ranks, the Army said.
It was learnt that the endurance competition was already going on for 72 hours and a 10-km leg with full load and weapon was undertaken at a relatively late hour — around 9 am — when the weather was not conducive.
When contacted, a senior Army officer said, “In an organised, supervised and monitored training activity near Pathankot, due to severe weather conditions, there has been one fatal casualty and few individuals admitted in Military Hospital Pathankot. The affected persons are being provided with requisite medical care.”
