Protesting against Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement about B R Ambedkar, the Opposition Congress and its frontal organisation Seva Dal will hold an event at Udaipur in Tripura’s Gomati district on Thursday as part of the party’s Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan campaign.
“These protests started when Home Minister Amit Shah said inside Parliament that if you had chanted the name of God many times, you would have been blessed with heaven. Protesting against this, the Congress decided to organise these programmes with the slogan ‘Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan’ across the country,” Congress Seva Dal national president Lalji Desai told reporters in Agartala on Wednesday.
Desai alleged that vandals linked to the ruling BJP destroyed publicity materials for the Congress campaign such as banners and posters. “The BJP’s gundabahini (goon force) is prevailing here and throughout the country as well. They (BJP) are saying that atrocities have declined, but the reality is different. The BJP’s goons destroyed banners and posters and publicity materials for the campaign on Tuesday,” he said.
The Congress leader further alleged that Tripura’s real employment data was being hidden, adding that the state, like Kerala, was much ahead in literacy.
“Sixty-nine per cent of children below five years old are malnourished. I want to ask, if the employment rate of a state is good, then why are children hungry and malnourished? Why is the rate of school dropouts increasing, especially in tribal belts? The BJP is a failure in terms of farmers, employment, and atrocities. This is a matter of concern for us,” Desai said.
In December 2024, the Congress protested in the state capital by burning Shah in effigy in protest against his alleged insult to the architect of the Constitution.
“Ab ek fashion ho gaya hai—Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar…. Itna naam agar bhagwan ke lete toh saat janmon tak swarg mil jata (There is a fashion these days – Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar…. Had you chanted the name of God these many times, you would have been blessed with heaven in seven births),” the Union home minister said in the Rajya Sabha during a two-day debate titled “Glorious Journey of 75 Years of the Constitution of India”.
