Tripura Police and the Government Railway Police at the Agartala Railway Station late on Friday evening held two people with illegal firearms after they arrived in the city on board the Jan Shatabdi Express.
Speaking to reporters, officer in-charge of Agartala Government Railway Police Station Tapas Das said, “We had a tip off about a man and woman coming to Agartala with weapons on them. We laid an ambush along with the RPF and Tripura Police and detained two passengers who were seen hurrying towards the flyover after the train reached Agartala at 10.30 pm.”
Das added, “Due to their suspicious activities, we questioned them but they couldn’t provide any satisfactory answer. We found a 9 mm pistol with a magazine, cash etc from their possession.”
The duo was arrested later and identified as Priya Debbarma, 22, and Karan Debbarma, 24, both from Khowai district.
They were booked under the Arms Act and other sections of the Indian Penal Code, produced before a local court where the police sought remand for seven days.
Preliminary interrogation has revealed that the arrestees were coming from Dharmanagar. However, the origin or the destination of the weapons are yet to be ascertained.
Meanwhile, five Bangladeshi nationals, who illegally sneaked into the Indian territory, were arrested from Shantirbazaar area in South Tripura district on Friday.
A senior official of the state police on Saturday informed that the arrestees confessed to have come to India in search of work.
Shantirbazaar police station in-charge Sanjib Lashkar said the arrested foreign nationals were made to appear before the Belonia District and Sessions court on Saturday with a plea for police remand.
