Five people wearing camouflage and carrying sophisticated weapons were arrested by the Manipur Police on Saturday — which led to a mob trying to storm a police station in Imphal demanding their release.
In a statement, Manipur Police said that it is attempting to crack down on the misuse of police uniforms and impersonation of police personnel by armed miscreants and that these five people had been arrested in an operation as part of this effort.
As the conflict in Manipur has continued, armed civilians wearing camouflage resembling police uniforms and claiming to be “police commandos” have been seen at the site of flare-ups and there have been multiple accounts by Kuki-Zomi villagers that “Manipur police commandos” have been part of the mob when their villages were attacked.
Following their arrest, a large number of people gathered at Porompat police station in Imphal East district and tried to storm it, demanding the release of these five people.
In retaliation, security forces used tear gas. Multiple people, including an RAF personnel, sustained injuries as a result of the confrontation.
“These five arrested persons were produced before Judicial Magistrate and they have been remanded into further police custody.Strict legal action is being taken against these anti-social elements. Manipur Police is determined to carry on such raids/ operations and make all out efforts to bring peace and normalcy in the State,” read the statement.
