Karnataka on Saturday despatched to Odisha a team led by Labour Minister Santosh Lad to bring stranded passengers from the state, even as the South Western Railway said that 33 passengers of the Howrah Express that had departed from Bengaluru had sustained minor injuries.
In a statement, the railway also said that one passenger from Karnataka was severely injured in the three-train crash that killed at least 288 people and injured hundreds more on Friday night.
The minister’s team has Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority commissioner Manoj Rajan and several others as members.
Thirty-two Karnataka sportspersons scheduled to leave Kolkata on Friday night have been stranded since the Railways cancelled at least 33 trains following the accident. They are volleyball players participating in a national tournament. “We have arranged a flight on Sunday and they will return early in the morning,” an official said.
Hundreds of passengers who were to leave Bengaluru were seen stranded at the city’s Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal station after trains were cancelled. The cancelled trains include the 12551 SMVT Bengaluru–Kamakhya Express, 12864 SMVT Bengaluru–Howrah Express and the 12253 SMVT Bengaluru–Bhagalpur Express.
As many of the stranded passengers are migrant labourers, NGOs stepped in to provide food and water to them.
The South Western Railway has established help desks at various stations in the city. Passengers can get information about the affected trains, including those involved in the accident, as well as updates on delayed trains and related information from these help desks.
A railway official said, “It is estimated that around 600 passengers are waiting at the Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal. Refunds have been given to passengers of the cancelled trains. We are in touch with officials on resuming the trains. Upon the restoration of the track, we will update you further.”
