The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) has announced the launch of its new online postgraduate programmes, MTech, MSc, and Postgraduate Diplomas (PG Diplomas), aimed at expanding access to advanced technical and analytical education for professionals and graduates across the country.
According to an official statement, applications for these programmes opened on October 5, 2025. The initiative, according to the institute, marks an expansion of IIT Kanpur’s outreach and academic innovation efforts, enabling working professionals and students to pursue advanced degrees and diplomas without leaving their current engagements.
The new online offerings include M.Tech programmes in Wireless Networks & Machine Learning, RF Engineering, and Microelectronics & VLSI; M.Sc programmes in Economics and Data Analytics; and PG Diplomas in Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, Cyber Security, and Renewable Energy Technologies.
These programmes have been designed to combine flexible digital delivery with IIT Kanpur’s academic standards, offering learners direct interaction with faculty through live sessions and mentorship. The duration of study will range from two to four years for M.Tech and M.Sc, and one to two years for PG Diplomas, depending on individual pace and course structure.
Students who complete the courses successfully will receive senate-approved degrees and diplomas, which will be awarded during IIT Kanpur’s convocation. They will also gain access to the institute’s global alumni network, providing opportunities for professional growth and collaboration.
Admission to these online programmes will be based on minimum eligibility criteria of 55% marks or a 5.5 CPI in the qualifying degree. Candidates can apply through valid national-level test scores such as GATE, JAM, CEED, CAT, GRE, or GMAT, depending on the specific programme and department requirements.
Alternatively, candidates can appear for IIT Kanpur’s own online entrance test. Departments may specify additional conditions such as academic background, professional experience, or interviews. Professionals with more than five years of relevant work experience, as well as nominees or sponsored candidates from government or defence organisations, may be exempted from the entrance test, according to the official release.
The institute stated that the online format has been structured to balance academic rigour with industry relevance, allowing learners to continue working while pursuing advanced education. Each programme will include live faculty sessions, practical problem-solving assignments, and opportunities to engage in interdisciplinary learning.
The curriculum, as outlined by IIT Kanpur, is intended to prepare learners for specialised roles in technology, economics, policy, and emerging fields that demand strong analytical and leadership skills.
According to IIT Kanpur’s Office of Outreach Activities, the new programmes represent the institute’s continued effort to make quality higher education accessible to a wider audience while maintaining the depth of its on-campus courses. The initiative supports the national goal of building a highly skilled workforce equipped to contribute to technological and economic growth.
The launch of these programmes reflects a growing shift among premier institutions towards flexible, digitally integrated learning models. IIT Kanpur’s move adds to this evolving trend, aligning with the demand for upskilling and re-skilling opportunities in India’s rapidly changing professional landscape.
