Barely minutes after the IIT-JEE (advanced) results were announced Sunday, the JEE advanced portal crashed. The website was unavailable till late in the evening even as anxious students desperately tried to access their results.

Authorities at IIT Delhi said IIT-Guwahati — which organised the exam — “grossly underestimated” the amount of traffic expected on the website, which caused technical snags throughout the day.

A senior official from IIT Delhi said, “We have heard reports of students being unable to access results. We created a few mirror sites for students to check their results but they were running very slowly due to the heavy traffic.” Sources also said the crash could have been the result of a possible cyber attack.

The portal has been “temporarily unavailable” since the result was announced at 9.52 am. Megha Mehta, an aspirant, said, “It took me three hours before I could finally check the result. First, it showed an error sign. Then, the site started to crash every time I entered my details.”

As many as 36,566 of the 1.5 lakh-odd candidates who took the exam have qualified for admissions into the country’s leading IITs. Delhi state topper Animesh Bohara secured the 19th rank in the examination.
