Radhakrishnan was born in 1882 in a town called Tiruttani in Andhra Pradesh. Though his father wanted him to take on the role of a priest, the boy’s talents brought him to Tirupati and later Vellore to study. He eventually joined Christian College, Madras, in order to study philosophy. It is said that when Dr Radhakrishnan became President (1962-1967), his students and friends wished to celebrate his birthday. However, known for his humble nature, he requested, “Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if September 5 is observed as Teachers’ Day.
