The Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB), formerly known as AHSEC, has announced that the Higher Secondary (HS) Final Examination 2026 will be conducted between February and March 2026.

According to the Board’s latest notice, the online form fill-up process for eligible students will begin on October 22 and continue until November 25. The Board has directed all junior colleges and higher secondary schools under Division-II to ensure no eligible student is excluded from the registration process.

“Applications will be accepted only through the online portal, and no offline submissions will be entertained under any circumstance,” the notice stated.

Eligibility and institutional guidelines

ASSEB has clarified that a student’s registration number remains valid for five years from the year of registration. However, candidates who fail to submit their forms before the deadline will not be permitted to appear for the HS Final Examination 2026.

Only students enrolled in recognised and approved institutions will be considered as regular candidates. Learners studying in non-recognised institutions during the 2024–25 session will be treated as ‘Institutional Private (IP)’ candidates and required to pay additional IP fees. If an institution loses its recognition, its students will automatically fall under this category.

Citing Government Notification No E-238074/471 dated November 7, 2022, ASSEB reiterated that students from government, provincialised, and recognised venture institutions whose parents’ annual income does not exceed Rs 2 lakh are exempted from examination fees.

Special categories eligible for HS final exam 2026

The Board also announced that candidates from ‘Betterment’, ‘Re-appearance’, ‘Subject Repeat’, ‘Compartmental,’ and ‘Certain Subject’ categories will be eligible to apply.

Betterment chance / re-appearance scheme

Students who passed the HS Final Examination 2025 for the first time can apply for the 2026 exam under the Betterment Chance or Re-appearance Scheme.

“Such students may apply online without prior permission from the Board,” the circular stated.

Under the Betterment Scheme, students may appear for a maximum of four subjects from their previous combination. Practical papers must also be retaken if included. Marks obtained in the 2026 exam will replace previous scores in the same subjects, and a new consolidated marksheet will be issued upon surrender of the old one.

Under the re-appearance scheme, students aiming to improve their overall performance, for eligibility in engineering, medical, or other competitive exams, can reappear in all subjects from their earlier combination. The better result will be retained. However, “under no circumstances will marks from a single improved subject be combined with the old result,” the Board stated.

Certain subject scheme

Candidates who passed the HS First Year Exam 2025 in certain subjects with board permission must obtain fresh approval to appear in the same subject in 2026. Additionally, students from earlier years who could not appear or pass in one elective subject may apply online for that specific subject under this scheme.

Compartmental and repeat categories

Candidates who failed to secure passing marks in one or more subjects in HS Final Exam 2025 may appear under the Compartmental Category for that specific subject or under the Repeat Category for all subjects.

The Board also stated, “Once the online form is submitted, the chosen scheme cannot be changed. Requests to alter from Compartmental to Betterment or any other category after result declaration will not be entertained.”

Students with a repeat result in previous exams within the valid registration session can reappear in 2026 as Non-Institutional Private (NP) candidates, applying only through the online portal.
