The Environment (Protection and Control) Authority Monday imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation, and a fine of Rs 10 lakh on the two concessionaires responsible for maintaining the Bawana and Narela Industrial areas — for poor management and open burning of industrial waste.
Ordering the Delhi Pollution Control Committee to carry out night patrolling, EPCA chairperson Bhure Lal said that most people in the area were dumping waste illegally on roads and empty plots at night. “Patrolling is the only way to catch culprits and solve the problem,” he said.
Lal said he witnessed open burning in the area Saturday, when he was visiting the Delhi Technological University in Bawana. “These children are among the brightest minds in the country and should not be forced to face these conditions,” Lal said.
The capital does not have a dedicated site to dump industrial waste, so all waste is sent to one of the three landfill sites in the city, officials said. Lal said the EPCA will take steps to address the issue.
