Post Or Polls?

The BJP seems to be facing a dilemma over an appointment granted to one of its leaders in Kerala. Actor-politician and former Rajya Sabha MP Suresh Gopi has recently been nominated as the president of Kolkata-based Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute. But Gopi is apparently in no mood to leave Kerala just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections as he is hoping to get a ticket. Sources said Gopi’s appointment, which was announced allegedly without consulting the Kerala leader, was part of a “conspiracy” planned by some leaders in the state unit to keep him away. Gopi, who still hasn’t made it clear whether he would accept the post, meant for three years, wants to discuss with the national leadership the “real politics” behind it, sources said.

Amid heightened diplomatic tension between India and Canada, the newly reconstituted Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs met last week. BSP’s Ritesh Pandey asked whether the committee, which met to select the subjects for examination by the panel this year, should examine the ongoing diplomatic row with Canada. Chairman P P Chaudhary was of the view that it would not be proper to take up the issue since the government was engaging with Canada to resolve the issue. The matter ended there as the Opposition and the Government are largely on the same page on the issue. The Congress, for instance, said the fight against terrorism has to be uncompromising but argued “intensive diplomatic engagement” was needed to resolve the crisis while ensuring security of Indians in Canada.
