Rahul Gandhi’s maiden speech as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha was keenly watched by his mother Sonia Gandhi and sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from the visitor’s gallery.

Both Sonia, who is now a Rajya Sabha MP, and Priyanka, who is all set to contest the Lok Sabha bypoll from Wayanad, took their seats in the gallery minutes before the Lower House met at 2.10 pm after lunch. They left soon after Rahul’s speech was over. Rahul made a quick visit to the new office allocated to him as the Leader of the Opposition before leaving the Parliament House. At the Makar Dwar, he met Sonia and Priyanka and hugged them, their photos eagerly captured by photographers waiting outside.

Friendly Banter

Days after their heated exchange in the Rajya Sabha, Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge and Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar shared light moments during Kharge’s 90-minute-long speech on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address. Before starting his speech, Kharge informed the Chair he could not stand for long as his legs were hurting.

To this, Dhankhar said he could address the House while sitting. Kharge didn’t agree to the idea and said delivering a speech while sitting is not that impactful. Dhankhar agreed with Kharge and said, “Haan, utna jazba nahi hai (yes, it’s not as fiery).” Kharge went on to deliver his speech while standing, but raised the issue of pain in his legs several times when he was interrupted during the speech by ruling party members. Once, he even complained that it seemed like he was being made to do “uthak baithak (sit-ups)”.
