Now that the Karnataka Assembly polls are over, many Congress leaders are wondering what is holding back party chief Mallikarjun Kharge from constituting the Congress Working Committee. Kharge took over as Congress president in October 2022, and at the Raipur AICC session in February this year, the party’s leadership had decided not to hold elections and authorised Kharge to nominate the new CWC. It has been three months since then, but there has been no word on when the new CWC will be constituted. The buzz in the party circle is that Rahul Gandhi will return to India on June 18 and crucial decisions on organisation will be taken after that.
When the Supreme Court reopens in July after the summer vacation, the Centre’s team of law officers is likely to see a change. With the terms of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and nine Additional Solicitors General in Delhi getting over on June 30, several extensions and some new appointments are expected. There are at least two vacant posts in the team for which those in legal circles say some new faces from ace law schools are also being considered.
Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh on Tuesday interacted with the top 20 candidates who have cleared the UPSC exam and called them the “batch of change”, given their varied educational backgrounds — from Humanities graduates to engineers, and one medical student. Singh said this batch will bring their technological know-how in running the administration and pointed out that the top four scorers are women, bringing a demographic change in the country’s top bureaucracy. He also noted that there are many students from Kendriya Vidyalayas and government schools, and not just those from elite institutions.
