Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi is likely to visit Guwahati to meet cultural icon Zubeen Garg’s family on Friday. With the grief and outcry in Assam after Garg’s demise is turning into a key political issue, Rahul’s visit will be significant. Garg, 52, died in Singapore on September 19 and his death has since become a political flashpoint in the northeastern state. With elections in the state less than six months away, Rahul’s visit will be watched closely by people from across the political spectrum, including the BJP leadership and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Ahead of the Winter Session that usually starts in November, the Parliament complex is being spruced up. The seats of the historic Central Hall in the Old Parliament building, now known as Samvidhan Sadan or Constitution Hall, are set to be reupholstered. Outside the building, the Prerna Sthal, where statues of freedom fighters and national leaders are installed, is being beautified too, with new landscaping and stone walkways being put up.
A senior officer at the Delhi Police headquarters recently issued an order asking all personnel to not bring gifts, not even flowers, to senior officers during Diwali. The order clearly states that contravention of the directions will be viewed adversely.
