Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai visited the family of jailed Samajwadi Party MLA Zahid Beg on Tuesday, prompting the SP top leadership to consider sending a delegation of their own to the legislator’s house. Beg, an MLA from Bhadohi Sadar constituency, has been accused of abetting suicide and violating child labour laws. He surrendered in a local court on September 17. After Rai released a statement saying the Congress “stands with Beg’s family in this difficult time”, the SP leadership in Lucknow has started discussing their next move, sources said. Though the SP and the Congress are allies, the SP knows that the Congress is eyeing the Muslim vote bank in Uttar Pradesh, which is crucial for it as well.

In the 24-year-old archival photo, Modi is seen interacting with the Indian diaspora members in Jamaica who had hosted him. PM Modi presented a cricket bat signed by the Indian cricket team to the Jamaican PM. Holness too gifted Modi a cricket bat signed by Jamaican cricket legend Chris Gayle, who is a part of the visiting delegation to India.

Setting The Stage

In the poll rallies of Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati in Haryana, her nephew and political successor Akash Anand is seen sharing the stage with her. A BSP leader said Akash, who is also the national coordinator of the party, attended such public meetings with his aunt in the past too, but only on a few occasions. In the ongoing Assembly polls, he has been seen on the stage with Mayawati in every election rally. Akash has been felicitated by leaders of both BSP and INLD, alliance partners in Haryana, who also address him as “BSP ke uttaradhikari (BSP successor)”. Akash is the poll in-charge of the BSP in Haryana.
