There may not be big changes in the Union Cabinet in the new government, but one difference is visible — the emergence of Defence Minister and BJP veteran Rajnath Singh as the key figure for coordinating with the NDA partners. Known for his warm ties with leaders across the parties, Singh has been assigned by the party to take up the frosty issues with the allies to evolve a consensus. The first two meetings of the NDA partners since the government formation took place at Singh’s residence — 17, Akbar Road.
BJP Kaiserganj MP Karan Bhushan Singh, 33, who is the son of former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, is being called “Bahubali bhaiya” (muscleman brother) by his supporters. His supporters, mostly youths, have put up hoardings across the constituency, addressing Karan with the new moniker. BJP had fielded Karan from Kaiserganj after his six-time MP father was dropped after charges of sexual harassment were levelled against him by six women wrestlers.
With the CISF recently taking over the security of the Parliament complex, some longtime staff and senior officials have started wearing their ID cards in lanyards around their necks to make it easier for the new security personnel to recognise them. Earlier, the Parliament’s own security staff would recognise the employees. After the Parliament security breach last year, the CISF was entrusted with the responsibility and it is learnt that the new security personnel are being trained in how to behave around MPs.
