Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan Saturday gave a clean chit to his Political Secretary and party colleague P Sasi who has been in the eye of a storm unleashed by CPI(M)-backed independent legislator P V Anvar.
Addressing the media, Vijayan said, “Sasi’s functioning as political secretary is exemplary. He is a member of CPI(M) state committee. There was no mistake on his part. The allegations are rejected with contempt and do not deserve any examination. Sasi is not there to act upon all the complaints from Anvar or others. Actions will be taken only as per law. He (Anvar) may be speaking out against Sasi because of his grudge towards him.”
Over the last one month, Anvar had been raising serious allegations against the Home Department under Vijayan.
The two-time legislator had described Sasi as a “total failure” and dubbed him as a “confidant who lands the chief minister in trouble”. Anvar had also alleged that ADGP (law and order) M R Ajith Kumar had connived with the RSS to spoil this year’s Thrissur Pooram, eventually contributing to the BJP win in the Lok Sabha elections from Thrissur.
Anvar’s allegation had triggered a revolt within the ruling LDF with prominent ally CPI questioning Kumar’s meeting with RSS national leaders. Anvar also said the ADGP and former Malappuram SP Sujith Das were looting part of smuggled gold which were seized by police outside Kozhikode airport.
Indicating that neither the party nor the government is backing the “one-man revolt” of the CPI(M)-backed independent MLA, Vijayan said, “It is the duty of police to strongly deal with smuggling and hawala. There is no question of police retreating from the action against smugglers. It is the responsibility of the state to act against the crimes of smuggling, hawala and drug rackets.”.
Vijayan also expressed his displeasure at Anvar for raising the allegations in public. He said if Anvar had any complaint against the ADGP, the ruling MLA should have first brought it to the notice of the party and the government. “Instead, he took the allegations to the media. Anvar lacks ‘Left culture’ and he is a person who came from the Congress. If he continues to make open statements, I would be forced to react. A special investigation team led by the state police chief is looking into the complaint (against ADGP). Action will be taken based on the probe,’’ said Vijayan.
Hours after Vijayan’s press conference, Anvar hit back, raising more allegations against Sasi and the ADGP. “I am not going to speak against the Chief Minister. I will continue my fight within the party as long as I can. If they dont want me, then I will have my way. I don’t share CM’s view that Sasi’s functioning is exemplary. I doubt whether he has links with rackets looting smuggled gold. There are people including Sasi and the ADGP who are misleading the chief minister,’’ he said.
