A 16-year-old girl died and over a dozen others were hospitalised of suspected food poisoning in Kerala’s Kasaragod district Sunday after they had shawarma from an eatery.
The victim was identified as Devananda and admitted to a hospital at Cheruvathur in the district on Saturday with symptoms of food poisoning. Later in the day, over a dozen people, mostly students, also sought treatment for food poisoning. They had reportedly eaten shawarma from an eatery at Cheruvathur.
After the death of the student, the health department issued an alert saying that all those who had shawarma from that particular eatery at Cheruvathur should immediately seek medical treatment if they felt uneasy.
Kerala Health Minister Veena George ordered a probe into the food poisoning. The state food safety commissioner was directed to submit a report on the incident and take action against the eatery based on it.
