The Veer Narmad South Gujarat University in Surat has failed six second and third-year BA and BCom students of its four affiliated colleges, fined them Rs 1,000 each and directed them to submit psychiatrist’s certificates declaring that they are mentally stable before they can appear for future examinations.
The reason: These students wrote about their friends’ love affairs and stories with adult content while also using abusive words for their principals and professors in their answersheets when they appeared for university exams in October.
After examiners flagged the content of these answersheets, a report was sent to the university’s “fact-finding committee”, headed by Vice-Chancellor Dr Kishorsinh Chavda, on October 11.
Members of committee called the six students and their confessional statements were recorded via audio and video. They also pledged not to repeat such an act, said university officials. All the six are male students, studying in four colleges in Surat, and their medium of instruction is Gujarati, they added.
When contacted, Dr Chavda said: “We have come across incidents of students using abusive language in the answersheets of university exams… So, the committee members decided to slap a fine and ask for a medical certificate from such students.”
Dr Snehal Joshi, a part of the 15-member committee, said: “We have decided not to tolerate such activities… They have to pay a fine of Rs 1,000 and submit a medical certificate from a psychiatrist to their college principals. They will get zero.”
