Doing away with the paper-based I-cards for its officers, the Punjab Police have now decided to issue plastic I-cards with unique codes to help check any kind of security breach.
The cards, which will be difficult to forge, have already been distributed among top officers and soon the entire force will be issued such cards.
The smart cards,as they are being called in the police circles, are based on the pattern of currency notes, where the logo of Punjab Police is in the background but can be seen only with laser light.
Besides the stamp-size photo of the officer,a hidden photo is pasted on the card which is also visible through laser, said a senior police officer.
The cards will also help check any intrusion in the police ring during VVIP duties in Punjab and identify the officer carrying it.
Police said there have been instances in the past where I-cards of officers were forged by criminals to commit offences. Certain breach in security reports were also reported where forged I-cards were used by anti-social elements.
With the new I-cards,a brain child of the Punjab DGP,it will be nearly impossible to forge the cards, said an officer.
The colour at the border of the card will categorise the rank and profile of the officer, with each wing being given a separate design, said a senior police officer.
Meanwhile, the Punjab Police have also ordered the use of shoulder badges for all its personnel. The badges,in different makes, will help identify the officer whether he is from district police, railway police,IRB or any other wing.
