Yellow alert issued for Pune dist, orange for ghat areas

Monsoon continues to be active over Maharashtra after the state received heavy to very heavy rains over the last two days. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for the district for the next two days, with an orange alert being issued for the ghat sections. IMD has said the monsoon’s withdrawal has been halted with the withdrawal line still lying over Gujarat, Punjab and Rajasthan.

Heavy and very heavy rainfall was reported from across the state on Saturday. Latur, Dharashiv, Parbhani and other parts of Marathwada continued to report heavy rainfall for a second consecutive day this week. In Nanded, a bridge which connects Udgit to Jalkot in Latur district, was swept away by heavy rain. Nanded and Dharashiv had reported extensive damage due to extremely heavy rains earlier in the season. Around 20 to 30 per cent of kharif crop in the state has been damaged due to rains.

In Pune, water has been released from almost all dams due to heavy rain in catchment areas. Water was released from Khadkwasla, which has led the irrigation department to sound a warning for people and villages who reside by the sides of the river. On Saturday, Indapur town in Pune district was water logged due to heavy rains over the last two days. In the case of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, rains battered the city in the early mornings of Saturday. Shivajinagar’s automatic weather station reported 28 mm of rainfall. The day had not seen much day but rainfall started again on Saturday evening.

The start of Navarati festival has seen rains dampening the mood of festival goers. IMD has said the rains will continue for the next two days.

A low pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal which has led to the rainfall. The ghat areas are expected to see very to extremely heavy rainfall for the next two days.
