Pune rural police arrested a two-wheeler rider for allegedly raping a 33-year-old woman at Thakursai village in Maval taluka of Pune district. Police have identified the accused as Balu Dattu Shirke (38), a farmer from Maval taluka.
As per a press release issued by the police Friday, the accused followed the victim while she was walking through Thakursai village around 2 pm on July 15. He allegedly took the woman to a jungle area nearby where he raped her, the press release stated.
Sandeep Singh Gill, Superintendent of Pune Rural Police, said that the victim filed her complaint on July 16. Subsequently, a first information report (FIR) of rape was lodged at Lonavala Rural Police Station in Pune Rural, under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 64, 351 (2).
A police team led by senior police inspector Avinash Shilimkar of the local crime branch and inspector Dinesh Tayade of Lonavala rural police station launched a search for the accused.
Cops checked the videos captured on CCTV cameras around the crime scene and other locations to get clues about the accused. The press release stated that the accused was identified and arrested within 24 hours after the offence was reported. Further investigation was on, police said.
