In a rare incident, a tumour weighing over 3 kilogram was removed from a 26-year-old woman’s liver in Pune. A team of doctors from Ruby Hall Clinic in Pune removed the tumour measuring 26 cm by 20 cm through a surgical procedure which lasted for about 8 hours.
The woman suffered from severe abdominal pain and the football-sized tumour had engulfed almost the entire right half of her liver. Extensive investigations revealed that the tumour covered almost the entire right half of the liver while the rest of the liver appeared normal. A team of surgeons including Dr. Dinesh Zirpe and Dr. Anuja Athale led by Dr. Aditya Kulkarni from Ruby Hall Clinic performed the surgery successfully.
The surgical team also removed the surrounding liver tissue without affecting the rest of the liver parts. The tumour had also compressed the vena cava, the body’s largest vein, raising concerns about the patient’s circulatory health, according to Dr Kulkarni.
“The surgery, a demanding ordeal that spanned nearly 8 hours, required the removal of the tumour along with the associated liver tissue. Despite the intricacies involved, the surgery resulted in a blood loss of around 700 to 800 ml. The patient has recovered and resumed normal activities,” Dr. Purvez Grant, Chief Trustee of the hospital said.
