The Pune traffic police Wednesday suspended three cops for allegedly issuing challans to commuters instead of managing heavy traffic in the Deccan Gymkhana area. They also concealed their name tags while issuing the challans, officials said.
The suspended personnel who belong to the Deccan Gymkhana traffic division will remain suspended pending an inquiry. The suspension order was issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Vijaykumar Magar. The three cops were spotted by Magar himself when he was going from Law College Road to Bhandarkar Road.
When contacted, DCP Magar said, “On Saturday, I was on Jangali Maharaj Road when I received multiple reports about traffic jams in the area. Orders were relayed to all units to deploy the full strength of traffic cops on the road to manage the traffic jams on the ground. When I was going to Bhandarkar Road from Law College Road, I found that three cops were issuing challans to commuters instead of managing the traffic to ease traffic jams.
“This was in contravention of clear directives in place to the traffic police that they should prioritise traffic regulation over enforcement of traffic challans. I also found out that the three cops had concealed their name tags while they were issuing challans. This was suspicious behaviour raising doubts of malpractices and in direct violation of the norms in place.”
