“Traditional assessment is all about marks, it has no meaning to the child. We are looking at descriptions of what a child knows and can do,” said Dr Indrani Bhaduri, CEO and Head of Performance Assessment, Review and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development (PARAKH) at NCERT.
Speaking at the inauguration of the 5-day workshop organised by PARAKH on ‘Holistic Progress Card (HPC) Secondary Stage & Standardization of Question Paper Templates’ for Maharashtra State Board school teachers in Pune, Dr Bhaduri said, “We are looking at transforming assessment. We are looking to shift the assessment from rote-based to competency-based. During the workshop we will give examples of what are rote-based assessments and how do we convert them to competency based assessments.” She added that the assessment also needs to be holistic and not just cognitive; whether sensitivities and values are being developed in the child. HPC is mandated by the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The onus of assessment should not be just on the teacher, Bhaduri explained, but also on the child. The children should know why and how they are being assessed, and how it will be useful to them. “Walls should not be there between community and school. We want the community to participate in the activities in the school, so we have included parental assessment as well…Traditional assessment is all about marks, it has no meaning to the child. We are looking at descriptions of what a child knows and can do.” said Bhaduri.
Sharad Gosavi, Director of Primary Education Maharashtra, also speaking at the event said, “We are planning on releasing the results of both Class 10 and Class 12 by May 15. We took feedback from the people and began the exams 10 days ago so that the exams are conducted with CBSE and ICSE exams and the results also come along with these boards. This will allow us to start 11th standard at a proper time. Students appearing for competitive exams will also get more time to study for them.”
