Sustainable building is road to future:

India should not underestimate its capacities as far as building green structures is concerned. The country has given great names in the past and we have high hopes from India in future,” said Chris Smith,COO,US Green Building Council.

“India should not underestimate its capacities as far as building green structures is concerned. The country has given great names in the past and we have high hopes from India in future,” said Chris Smith,COO,US Green Building Council (USGBC). Smith was on a visit to city-based Suzlon One Earth headquarters in Hadapsar on Tuesday.

“There is a general impression that green buildings are costly. But the cost when spread over a period is not only beneficial but also of immense importance for saving our globe. Our aim is to promote responsible building amongst corporates. Green buildings cost less over period, are energy efficient and help defeat climate change,” he said.

USGBC is a Washington DC-based non profit organisation committed to sustainable development through cost effective and energy-saving green buildings. The council also runs Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building certification programme as a part of which the LEED India provides building owners, architects, consultants, developers, facility and project managers tools that they need to design, construct and operate green buildings. “In India, till date we have had over 350 registrations, out of which 50 have been certified and three have been awarded Platinum rating by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC),” said Smith.

Working closely on a B2B module that involves urging developers towards creating green structures,Smith said in India he felt the need to involve the government agencies in promoting the concept.
