Eight Schoolchildren were injured and had a narrow escape after a school bus met with an accident in Uruli Kanchan area on the outskirts of Pune. The bus was hit from the back by a tempo carrying heavy steel rods, which pierced through the rear of the bus after breaking the back windshield. The accident took place after a biker suddenly blocked the bus’s way. A school attendant and the biker were also injured in the accident.

Police said there were around 30 children in the bus at the time and those injured were not hurt by the steel bars. Officials from Uruli Kanchan police station under Pune Rural police said the incident took place around 2.10 pm on the Pune-Solapur Highway at Sortapwadi near Uruli Kanchan town. Police said the bus was carrying children aged between six and seven years from Olympus School for Excellence, which is located at Bhandgaon in Daund taluka of Pune district.

“Initial probe suggests that a biker suddenly blocked the bus’s path by wrongly entering the road from a broken median. It forced the bus driver to come to a sudden halt but it still knocked the biker down, injuring him. Because of this, a tempo carrying steel rods, which was behind the bus, suddenly came to a halt and hit the bus. A bunch of steel rods that the tempo was carrying slid from its position and pierced through the back windshield of the bus. Eight children sustained minor injuries. But fortunately these injuries were not due to the steel rods, but due to the sudden brakes and some due to pieces of glass. All have been given basic treatment and have been released,” said Inspector Shankar Patil of Uruli Kanchan police station.

Inspector Patil added, “We launched a probe into the incident and a case was registered against the biker and the tempo driver based on preliminary findings.” Late on Wednesday night, an FIR was registered against the biker who caused the accident. Police have booked the driver of the tempo that had been carrying the steel rods without any safety precautions. The injuries of the school attendant and the biker were also not serious, an officer said.
