Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said the biggest threat posed by artificial intelligence is online fraud and that he recently came across a Deepfake video of himself promoting a medicine on social media.
“The other day, I came across my own video on social media. It was a normal video where I was giving a speech. But the speech was different and I was saying that such and such doctor has developed such and such medicine, and I have already used it and you also use it,” said Fadnavis at at the inauguration of Symbiosis Artificial Intelligence Institute (SAII) in Pune.
On the flip side, Fadnavis also spoke about the responsible use of AI and the positive changes it can bring about. He said that in the present era, artificial intelligence, quantum computing and semiconductors are the three most important technological advancements. “If such technologies are utilized correctly, efficiency and the speed of progress can be increased multifold. Therefore, accepting artificial intelligence for favorable development is the need of the hour,” he said.
Fadnavis described a machine he saw at a start-up exhibition that could photograph a human retina and analyse it in quick time for detection of any necessary health procedures using AI.
“The photograph will be analysed in a minute and it will have 15,000 slices of the image. And it will tell what is the health of your retina and whether you require any procedure or glasses with precision…In the very rural parts where doctors don’t reach or doctors don’t want to go there, this machine gives accessibility to an ophthalmologist without him being present,” said the Chief Minister.
SAII has begun operations in this academic year with a batch of 190 students. It offers undergraduate programs in BBA and B.Sc. with specializations in AI, designed to integrate technology, management, and societal applications. Professor Loveleen Gaur has been appointed as the director of the institute.
