Parts of Pune on Tuesday experienced a very intense to extremely intense spell of rain that an expert said was very close to a cloudburst. The Wadgaonsheri area received 120.5 mm of rainfall, with most of it occurring between 11 am and 2 pm.
The Dhanori, Lohegaon and Kalyani Nagar areas reported flash floods as a result.
Anupam Kashyapi, former head of weather forecasting at the India Meteorological Department, said that it was not a cloudburst technically. A cloudburst is when an area gets more than 100 mm of rainfall within a short span of one hour.
“The localised nature of the rainfall is due to the formation of the cloud cell. The cloud had formed near Lohegaon and then started moving. Thus the rainfall in these areas was very intense,” he said.
Overflowing rainwater drains saw many residents complain of floodwater entering their homes. Similar was the situation in other parts of the city as Koregaon Park reported 80 mm and Shivajinagar 68.3 mm of rainfall.
Videos of waters flowing with great force were shared on social media. One of them showed a scooter being pulled by the water stream along with the rider.
Most areas of Pune reported good rainfall—a much-needed relief from the scorching heat. This is typical of the pre-monsoon rain, which starts in the evening and continues for a short spell.
Kashyapi said all these signs are favourable for the quick entry of the monsoon in Maharashtra. The monsoon has advanced in Karnataka and conditions are favourable for its further movement towards peninsular India.
