The Pune city police paraded notorious gangster Suraj Thombre, a key accused in the murder of former NCP corporator Vanraj Andekar, and made him do frog jumps on Monday night.

Thombre was out on bail in the Andekar murder case and had been directed to stay out of Pune city, according to the police. But he recently got a court’s permission to come to Pune city for three days for his father’s medical treatment.

But, during this period, he and around 200 others, including some history-sheeters, allegedly attended a Patit Pavan Sanghatna programme near the Chhatrapati Sambhaji statue in the city’s Deccan area on August 23. Videos and reels showing Thombre being lifted up by his supporters on their shoulders and walking in the area went viral on social media.

On learning about it, a police team reached the place, but Thombre managed to escape from there. Crime Branch teams launched a search for him, leading to his capture on Monday. The police then paraded him and made him do frog jumps on a city street.

Amitesh Kumar, Commissioner of Police, Pune, said that the police would submit a report seeking the cancellation of Thombre’s bail in the court. He also said that stern action would be taken against those circulating reels or videos glorifying criminals.

A resident of the Nana Peth area of Pune city, Thombre is known to be a rival of Suryakant alias Bandu Andekar of the dreaded Andekar gang.

Former NCP corporator Vanraj Andekar, 40, who was shot dead near his residence in Nana Peth on September 1, 2024, was Suryakant’s son. The police chargesheeted 21 people, including Vanraj Andekar’s sister Sanjivani Komkar and brother-in-law Jayant Komkar, along with Suraj Thombre, in the murder case.
