The Pune city police recently arrested a man who allegedly tried to kill a woman with whom he had a love affair in the past, by firing bullets at her in the Baner area, on the morning of August 29.

The police have identified the accused as Gaurav Mahesh Naidu, 25, a resident of Gaikwad Nagar in Punawale. They have seized a country-made pistol and three live cartridges from his possession.

The 24-year-old woman, who escaped unhurt in the incident, had lodged a first information report (FIR) in this case at the Baner police station, under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 109, 351(3), and 78, and sections of the Indian Arms Act.

Naidu had a love affair with the complainant, but they had a break-up about a year ago. Naidu had then met with an accident, causing an injury to his leg. The police suspect that Naidu was holding the woman responsible for his pains, and so he allegedly decided to kill her.

A resident of Pimple Gurav, the complainant woman, is an MBA student and was doing an internship at a private company in the Baner area.

She was about to reach the office on the last day of her internship on August 29. But the accused allegedly followed her soon after she left her home. He intercepted her near Ashwamit House in Virbhadra Nagar in the Baner area around 10.30 am.

The police said the accused allegedly pointed a pistol at her and pulled the trigger, but the bullets did not fire. As the woman shouted, people around the spot rushed for help. The accused then fled from the spot.

A crime branch team launched a search for the accused. Cops got information that the accused was trying to escape from the city from Khadki railway station, stated a press release issued on Sunday.

A team led by Senior Police Inspector Ajay Waghmare then laid a trap and nabbed the accused within 24 hours after the incident was reported.

“The accused was in the past arrested in an attempted murder case lodged at Wakad police station. A prima facie probe had revealed that he brought the illegal country-made pistol from Madhya Pradesh,” said Inspector Waghmare.

Senior Police Inspector Chandrashekhar Savant of Baner police station is investigating the case further.
