In an effort to enhance the travel experience of passengers, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has announced plans to add 16 new check-in counters at the New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) at Pune International Airport. Union Minister of State for Cooperation and Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol revealed this on his social media handle on Monday evening.
Mohol’s tweet on X states that there are currently 34 check-in counters, which can handle peak-hour capacity of 3,000 passengers at NITB. The addition of the new check-in counters will increase the total number of counters to 50. The expansion will include an area of 4,000 sqm at an additional cost of Rs 25 crore, and it is expected to be completed by March 2025.
The minister said the AAI has announced the plan with the aim to reducing check-in and frisking times for passengers. The expansion will also include enhanced security measures, such as additional Door Frame Metal Detectors (DFMDs), X-ray machines, and space for retail shops.
The new check-in counters will be located in the revamped arrival hall of the old terminal building, which will be converted into an extended departure hall connected to the new terminal building. The upgrade comes just months after the commissioning of the NITB on July 14 this year.
