Pune: ‘Drunk driver’ rams car into roadside eatery; two killed

IN A suspected case of drunk driving, a speeding car plowed into two men standing on the road side on Pune-Nashik Highway in Chakan and then crashed into the shed of an eatery demolishing it in the early hours of Saturday.

The driver of the car who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and another passenger sustained injuries in the accident as well.
The accident took place around 12.30 am on Saturday on the Pune-Nashik Highway at Waki Phata located around 20 kilometers from Pimpri Chinchwad city.

Police have identified the deceased as Yogesh Vasant Kad (47), a resident of Sanosh Nagar in Waki Budruk who owned a roadside eatery at Waki Phata and Vivek Chhetri (25), who hailed from Nepal and worked as a cook at the eatery. Police have arrested the car driver Ashok Shamrao Kadam (36). Kadam and his fellow passenger Santosh Sakharam Ghode (39), sustained injuries in the crash.

An officer from Chakan police station said, “After closing their eatery for the day, Kad and Chhetri were standing on the roadside next to the shed of the eatery. The speeding car driven by Kadam knocked them down. The car hit a bike parked there and then crashed into the shed of a sweets shop demolishing it. Kad was taken to Chakan Rural Hospital and Chhetri was rushed to a private hospital in ambulances by some locals. They were pronounced dead by the doctors at the hospitals. Kadam and passenger Santosh Ghode sustained injuries in the accident.” said Sub Inspector Amol Dere from Chakan police station.

Sub Inspector Dere added, “Primary probe suggests that Kadam was under influence of alcohol. We have sent the sample of blood for a medical test to confirm. He was placed under arrest after the accident.”
