Pune civic body introduces `Sponge Gardens’ around water bodies to control flood situations

Proposing a draft Development Plan for nine villages, The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Thursday introduced ‘Sponge Garden’ reservation around water bodies to protect the area from flooding. The citizens are now appealed to file suggestions and objections on the draft plan.

On October 4, 2017, the PMC area was extended with the inclusion of nine villages. The newly included area for which the draft Development Plan has been prepared include parts of Lohegaon, Keshavnagar in Mundhwa, Sadesatranali in Hadapsar, Uttamnagar, Shivne, Ambegaon Khurd, part of Undri, part of Dhayari and Ambegaon Budruk. The decision to prepare a Development Plan for the nine villages was taken on June 28 in 2018.

The nine villages have a population of six lakhs and expected population in 2035 is 8.1 lakh. Considering the estimated population, the draft Development Plan has been prepared with civic facilities to cater to public needs. A total of 5500 hectare land is covered and 374 hectare land, which is eight percent of the total land, is reserved for public amenities while 42 per cent of total area is for residential purposes. For traffic and transportation, there is reservation of 15 percent in the total reserved area and there is reservation of 41 hectares for primary schools and high schools, 18 hectares for hospitals and urban health centres, 74 hectares for sports and playgrounds, 88.12 hectares for developing gardens.

“The villages have roads having width of 18 metre, 24 metre, 30 metre, 36 metre and 45 metre. There is a Sponge Garden reservation proposed for the area around water bodies which will help in flood control and increase the ground water table naturally,” said Prashant Waghmare, City Engineer of PMC.

The Draft Development Plan has been published to invite suggestions and objections from the public which have to be done in next 60 days.The maps and report pertaining to the said Draft Development Plan are available for inspection by the public during office hours on all working days at Assistant Director, Town Planning, Pune Branch, Pune, New Administrative Building, and at Pune Municipal Corporation, Building Development Department in Shivajinagar.Further, the maps of the said Draft Development Plan are also made available on the official website, http://www.pmc.gov.in.

The suggestions or objections, if any, from the public on Draft Development Plan, along with reasons in writing have to be submitted to the Appointed Officer and Assistant Director, Town Planning, Pune Branch, Abhijit Ketkar.
