Pune Rural police have launched an investigation after the body of an unidentified man — his limbs bound and stuffed in a tied gunny bag — was found floating in the Mula-Mutha river in Daund taluka on Monday. Investigators suspect the man may have been strangled and released details of his tattoos in an effort to identify him.

An FIR has been registered at Yavat police station under Pune Rural police on Monday evening. Earlier in the day, the Yavat police station received a call from the police patil — a local funcationary appointed by the revenue department who acts as liaison for the police — of Khamgaon village in Daund taluka. The police were informed about a gunny bag that had been spotted on the surface of the Mula Mutha river. The gunny bag, which was stuck at a location near the local crematorium, was fished out with the help of the villagers. The mouth of the gunny bag was tied and it contained the body of a man whose limbs were bound. The body was subsequently sent for autopsy, an officer from the police station said.

“The deceased was around 35 years old. The body had started decomposing. The initial findings of the autopsy suggests that the death occurred due to strangulation and a blow to the head. With this report and the very fact that the body was bound and stuffed in a gunny bag, a murder investigation has been launched. We have invoked Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita sections pertaining to murder and disappearance of evidence. The local police station and local crime branch of the Pune Rural police are conducting a probe in the case,” the officer added.

Another officer from Yavat police station said, “We are yet to establish the identity of the deceased. We are looking into the missing persons reports from the nearby police station and neighbouring jurisdictions. On one hand of the deceased, there is a tattoo with the name Sheetal written in Devnagari script accompanied by a heart sign. On the other hand there is a tattoo of deity Narsimha’s face.”
