With the ongoing rainfall increasing the storage in dams, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has withdrawn the water cut in the city that was introduced around two months ago due to the delayed monsoon.
The rain has increased the storage to above 20 TMC in four dams upstream Mutha river from where the needs of the city are met. The city gets water from Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar dams. The water level in the four dams is continuously rising and the administration had to discharge water to the Mutha river and canal after the Khadakwasla dam got filled.
“The water cut in the city is being withdrawn with immediate effect. The situation will be reviewed after two months,” said Pune’s Guardian Minister Chandrakant Patil.
The water supply was snapped once in a week, creating problems in parts of the city.
The ongoing rainfall improved the storage in dams providing water to city and the demand for withdrawing the water cut gained steam.
“The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) implemented once in a week water cut citing less storage in dams and possibility of less rain for this year. It is going on from last two months with water cut every Thursday. However, the situation is changing now as the rain and the storage in dams have improved,” said Vivek Velankar of Sajag Nagrik Manch had said seeking withdrawing water cut.
BJP legislator Siddharth Shirole, NCP legislator Sunil Tingre and Congress legislator Ravindra Dhangekar too had demanded to restore normal supply of water.
A delegation of MNS led by city unit chief Sainath Babar had met the municipal commissioner Vikram Kumar and submitted a memorandum urging to withdraw the water cut.
